The current economic crisis has put pressure on federal, state, and local budgets, and as a result funding for non-profit agencies serving vulnerable populations such as those living with a Mental Illness and Autism has been decreased. The Mental Health Association (MHA), a non-for-profit membership organization dedicated to improving mental health in our community through advocacy, education, program development and the delivery of direct services, is scheduled to suffer a cut in funding to our Programs for Children and Adults diagnosed with Autism.
As part of the 2013-2014 New York State Budget the Governor and legislature voted to cut $90 Million dollars to providers funded through the Office of Person's With Developmental Disabilities. The MHA programs affected include our group home The Terrace a home for 10 autistic children, Titus Rd. a home for 6 autistic young adults, Service Coordination and In-Home Respite. These are crucial services providing housing and necessary supports to the developmentally disabled. We will continue to fight for restoration of these cuts. We need your support!
Since 1953 the Mental Health Association of Nassau County has supported our neighbors. Today we face new challenges such as: bullying via the internet impacting our children, veterans returning from service in Iraq and Afghanistan with high levels of PTSD, and individuals diagnosed with mental illness are dying 25 years earlier then the general population, due to their inability to access proper primary care. We are actively responding to all these challenges and more. The Mental Health Association is seeking your support to continue our work here in Nassau County.
We are on the front lines of advocacy for those that may not have a voice when it comes to accessing care for mental illness, substance abuse, and autism. Our 31 programs help support over 9,000 local residents. Many of our services are of little or no cost to consumers. Our work is guided towards recovery so that a person can eventually become less dependant on services and enjoy all the benefits life has to offer.
