Our purpose

Advocacy is the heart of the Mental Health Association. The Public Policy Department is a clear and powerful voice on behalf of people with mental illnesses. We are dedicated to promoting mental health, preventing mental disorders and supporting recovery.

We monitor policy on the state, federal and local levels and work to make community-based mental health care a priority for our legislators. We also support humane mental health legislation, organize grass roots action and work to ensure that our community receives its fair share of mental health funding.

MHA advocates are committed to broad social justice issues such as ending discrimination and eradicating the stigma of mental illness. We believe that all people are entitled to live a life with dignity and respect and fulfill their own potential.

To receive information about specific state, federal or county issues, or learn what you can do to join our advocacy efforts, call the Advocacy Department at 516.489.2322, ext. 1101 or e-mail us at advocacy@mhanc.org. Also, see “Issues and Alerts” and “Your Rights” and “Your Legislators” on our website.
