Remembering Joan Saltzman

On February 9, 2019, Mrs. Joan Saltzman passed away at 99 years old. She will be deeply missed. Mrs. Saltzman was an incredible advocate for those with mental illness and developmental disabilities and was an integral part of the MHANC family. Joining our mission in the 1970’s as a member, and eventual President, of the Board of the Directors, she tirelessly worked with our agency for 25 years, retiring in 2002.  Of her many notable achievements, Mrs. Saltzman was instrumental in the founding of the Terrace, the MHANC’s residence for children with autism.  She also created the Saltzman Family Scholarship to assist adults with psychiatric disabilities return to college.  Over the past three decades, countless young adults have benefited from her family’s generosity. Upon her retirement, the Board of Directors assumed responsibility for the continuation of the Saltzman Family Scholarship (now known as the Board of Directors Scholarship) to continue championing Mrs. Saltzman’s incredible work. This scholarship is still awarded every year to further the mission near and dear to Mrs. Saltzman.

Board members have always spoken of Mrs. Saltzman’s commitment to the future happiness and productivity of consumers. This progress would not have been made had without her deep concern for the issues and programs that we here at the MHANC support every day. She was a good friend and wise advisor during her tenure as Board president.

Mrs. Saltzman’s contributions to the many other human service agencies on Long Island can be seen all throughout Nassau County. Her kindness, generosity and compassion will surely be missed.
